Spearmint (Mentha spicata)
Spearmint is used similarly to peppermint in medicinal preparations. Spearmint is particularly beneficial in relieving digestive disorders, colic , and flatulence due to their carminative and antispasmodic actions, and may be helpful in the treatment of IBS. Spearmint may also relieve motion sickness and nausea. The milder spearmint is a great alternative when prepared as an infusion for children. Spearmint is a diuretic and has been used to treat cases of suppressed or painful urination. It is high in vitamins A and C.

You can start spearmint seeds indoors 8 – 10 weeks prior to the last spring frost or sow the seeds outdoors in partially shaded, moist, soil. Sow the herb seeds no more than 1/8 inch deep in loose soil. It’s best to transplant the Spearmint seedlings when they get to 2 inches tall. Harvest leaves when the Spearmint reaches 12 inches. You should prune larger outside leaves to encourage more leaf growth. Young leaves and stems have the best flavor.
Mint should be harvested in the morning before the sun effects its volatile oils.
